Introduction

Well Seeker Pro version 2.2.1.11 features improvements to the Charts and to the Wall Plot Composer. These improvements provide better performance, a more responsive user interface and new features.

This technical note details the changes.

New Chart Features

The charts have been updated to provide better performance along with a number of new features which provide additional functionality.

The charts can now be zoomed in/out by scrolling the mouse wheel. Once zoomed in, the chart view can be moved by left-clicking and dragging.

The Chart Properties dialog has been updated to be easier to use, and provide new options. See the New Chart Properties section below for a full breakdown.

Users now have the ability to add custom labels to their charts. See the next section for details.

Custom Labels

The new custom labels feature allows the user to add bespoke labels to their charts in the main Well Seeker interface, or in the Wall Plot Composer. There are 2 ways to add a custom label:

The first way to add a custom label is by right clicking on any chart and selecting Add Custom Label.

The functions available in the Label Properties Dialog are described below:

Text: Enter the label text you wish to display on the chart. Double click to edit.

Colour: The colour of the label text. Double click to edit.

Tether Colour: The colour of the tether line, if has tether is set to YES. Double click to edit.

Bold/Italic/Underlined: Set these options to YES to make the label text bold, italic and/or underlined.

Size: The font size of the label. Double click to edit.

Angle: Set the angle that the label is displayed at on the chart.

Has Point Marker/Point Marker: Set to YES to enable a point marker at the location that the tether line points to. Use the point marker option to set the shape to a circle or a cross.

New Wall Plot Composer

The Wall Plot Composer has also been updated to provide better performance. The composer has improved functionality on external monitors, and the user should find that tables and charts are easier to move around and resize. Additionally, charts on the wall plot composer can now be zoomed in/out in the same way as charts in the main Well Seeker interface.

The user can now zoom in and out of the page by holding CTRL and scrolling the mouse wheel. While zoomed in, the user can move the page around by holding CTRL and then left-clicking and dragging the page around.

The user can now select multiple items at once by either holding down the CTRL key and sequentially clicking on multiple items, or by left clicking and dragging over the objects.

When the WPC is first opened for a plan or survey, the offset well selection in the main user interface is copied across into the offset selector in the WPC. This can then be adjusted as required by the user.

In addition, some new functions have been added:

New Functions

New Chart Properties

The Chart Properties Dialog allows the user to customise how charts are displayed in the main Well Seeker interface and in the Wall Plot Composer. The chart properties for a chart can be accessed by double left clicking on it, or by opening the Plots menu and selecting Chart Properties whilst viewing the chart.

In version 2.2.1.11, the Chart Properties Dialog has been redesigned to provide more customisation options. It also no longer closes when the Apply button is clicked making it easier for the user to make adjustments. Note, however that while the user can see the selected changes in the chart when they hit apply, they will not be able to directly do anything in the chart itself while this dialog is open.

The sections below detail the options available in the Chart Properties Dialog:

Series Styles

The Series Styles section allows the user to customise how the reference wellbore, and any offsets, are displayed on the chart. The table displays the reference well and any selected offsets.

Name: The name of the actual well or plan.

Type: Whether the well is an actual well or a planned well.

Colour: The colour of the well/plan when displayed on the chart. Double click to edit.

Line style: The style of line used to plot the well on the chart. Double click to edit.

Visible: Toggle this on/off to show or hide the well on the chart. This option allows the user to tweak which offsets are visible without having to deselect them in the Select Offset dialog .

Force Colour: If force colour is turned on in the actual well or plan properties, this column will be checked and the user cannot edit the colour in the chart properties.

Marker: Double click to select the marker symbol used when show markers is toggled on.

Only show principal plan: Toggling this option on will hide all offsets other than the principal plan assigned to the reference well.

Randomize well colours: Toggling this option will assign a random colour to all wells in the table.

Show markers: Adds marker symbols at regular intervals along the wells. Does not apply to 3D plots.

Targets

This section allows the user to display targets, drillers targets and lease lines on the chart. To be available for display, targets must be assigned to the reference well using the Targets Dialog. This can be assigned by right clicking at actual/plan level and selecting Targets.

Assigned targets will be listed in the table in this section.

Display targets: Displays all visible targets on the chart. Most other options in this section require this option to be toggled on before they become available.

Target names: Adds a label to each target, showing the target name.

Lease line names: Adds a label to each lease line, showing the lease line name.

Lease line intersections: If this option is toggled on, and one of the displayed wells crosses a lease line, an annotation will be added to the chart at the point where the lease line is intersected.

Drillers targets: If any of the displayed targets have a drillers target assigned, toggling this option on will display them on the chart.

Background: Sets the background colour of the target labels.

Label Colour: Sets the text colour of the target labels.

Name: The name of the target.

Lease line: If the target has been assigned as a lease line in the Targets Dialog, the checkbox here will be checked. This column is not editable.

Colour: The line colour of the target. Double click to edit.

Line style: The style of line used to draw the target. Double click to edit.

Visible: Toggle this on/off to show or hide the target on the chart. This option allows the user to tweak which targets and lease lines are visible.

Filled: Toggling this option on will fill in the target. Set the fill colour by double clicking in the Fill Colour cell.

Labels/Symbols

This section allows the user to configure how labels, such as lithologies, annotations and casing, are displayed.

Lithologies

This section allows the user to display and customise lithologies on their chart. Lithologies are defined in the Lithologies Dialog, which can be accessed by right-clicking at plan or actual well level. Lithologies cannot be displayed on plan view plots.

Display: Displays the lithology labels on the plot. These will be displayed at the TVDs entered in the Lithologies Dialog. This option must be toggled on before other options can be used.

Include TVD: Adds the lithology TVD to each label.

Labels on RHS: In section view charts, moves labels to the right-hand side of the chart.

Lines: Draws lines on the chart at the TVD of each lithology top. If a dip value has been entered in the Lithologies Dialog, the line will be angled.

Planes (3D): Only available in 3D Plots, and the Lines option must be toggled on. Converts the displayed lines into 3D planes.

Background: Sets the background colour of the label.

Label Colour: Sets the text colour of the label.

Line Colour: Sets the colour of the lines, if the Lines option is toggled on.

Depth Labels

This section allows the user to annotate plots with depth labels at regular intervals.

Depths: Toggles on depth labels. This option must be toggled on before other options can be used.

Inclinations: Adds the inclination to each depth label.

Azimuths: Adds the azimuth to each depth label.

Label at survey: Displays the depth labels at each survey instead of a set interval.

Angled: Re-orientates the labels so that they are displayed perpendicular to the wellbore.

Include offsets: Applies the selected settings to offset wells as well as the reference well.

Label Colour: Sets the text colour of the label.

Background: Sets the background colour of the label.

Limits: Allows the user to define the maximum and minimum values for the X and Y axis. Toggle the checkboxes besides each one to allow Well Seeker to automatically set the limits.

  • If the fixed scale option is not selected, changing the min and max values will change the scale

  • If the fixed scale option has been toggled below, entering a min or max value will cause the other value for that axis to change. This is to preserve the scale value set by the user.

Grid Lines: Allows the user to toggle whether major and minor grid lines are displayed on the chart. Grid lines can be toggled for individual axis. Use the dropdown boxes to the right to set the colour of the gridlines.

Ticks: Uncheck the checkboxes to manually define the interval between each major and minor tick on the X and Y axis.

Scale: The fixed scale option must be toggled on before this can be edited. Allows the user to set the axis scale sizes.

Thick major gridlines: Toggle this on to increase the width of major grid lines on the chart.

Show scales: Toggle this option on to display the scale/in or scale/cm value on the chart axis.

Scale/cm: Toggles between scale/in or scale/cm if the show scales option above is turned on.

Fixed scale: Toggling this on allows the user to manually set the scale

Banded grid: This option is only available in the Section View Plot in the Wall Plot Composer. When selected, it removes the gridlines from the area of the chart to the right of the wellbore. This provides a cleaner space in the wall plot to add additional plots and tables.

Resize chart: This option is only available in the Wall Plot Composer and only when the fixed scale option and the X and Y axis limits have been manually selected. With these selections made, the chart is fixed and the only thing the user can do to it is move it around the page in the wall plot composer. Selecting Resize Chart greys the fixed scaled values so they are no longer editable. The user can then adjust the X and Y axis limits. Adjusting these changes the physical size of the plot on the page while maintaining the scale. For example, if the X axis min is set to 0 and the max is set to 2000, changing the max to 4000 would double the width of the plot on the page.

  • NOTE: This only works if the chart is adjusted to a size that stays within the page limits of the WPC. If the user enters a value which would mean the plot is greater than the page size, then nothing will happen.

Colours

This section allows the user to set the colours of the chart background and axis.

Background: Sets the colour of the chart background in section and plan view charts.

X Z Plane: Sets the colour of the X & Z planes in the 3D plot.

Y Plane: Sets the colour of the Y planes in the 3D plot.

Text: Sets the colour of the title and axis labels.

Graph Options

This section defines the chart border and allows the user to display a legend.

Border: Defines the style of the border around the outside of the chart.

Legend: Any option other than hide will display a legend on the chart, containing each well path currently displayed on the chart.

Font Sizes

This section allows the user to define the font size of any text in the chart.

Labels: Defines the size of any labels (casing, annotations, etc.) on the chart.

Axis numbers: Defines the size of the text in the axis titles.

Grid numbers: Defines the size of the numbers displayed on each axis.

3D Chart

The following settings only apply when viewing a 3D plot.

Display: Toggles the worksight on, which displays the high side direction and displays a circular sight around the fly down sphere, which represents distance.

Compass Ring: Toggles the compass ring, which displays the direction of north/south and east/west around the fly down sphere.

Info text: Changes the colour of the info text on the left hand side of the chart, that displays trajectory information of the wellbore at the current fly down sphere position.

Radius: Defines the radius of the worksight.

Increment: Defines the increment of the distance markers in the work sight.

Show Rig: Toggles a 3D model of a rig at the well surface location.

Lease Line Curtain: Toggling on changes lease lines from 2D shapes to 3D shapes, that extend from surface down to the deepest TVD of the displayed wells. Targets must be displayed before this option has any effect.

Survey spheres: Sets the size of survey spheres, which can be toggled on/off in the Depth Labels section.

Fly down spheres: Sets the size of the fly down sphere.

Bit projection: If the reference well has a projection added to it, this option can be used to toggle the display of the projection on/off on the chart.

Bit projection colour: Sets the colour of the bit projection.

Error Ellipses

These options control how error ellipses are displayed on charts. Error ellipses can be toggled on or off by opening the Plots menu and selecting Turn On Error Ellipses. Note that displaying error ellipses when a large number of offsets are enabled can impact performance.

Interval: Sets the display interval, in surveys, of the error ellipses on the chart. For example, an interval of 2 will display an ellipse on every other survey.

Use series line style/Line style: Toggle use series line style to match error ellipse line styles with the line styles of their respective wellbores. If toggled off, the line style dropdown can be used to manually configure the line style.

Use series colour: Toggle this option to match error ellipse colours with the colours of their respective wellbores.

Travelling Cylinder

These options are only available when viewing a travelling cylinder plot.

North/Highside: Toggle between referencing the chart to north or highside referenced. The default reference can be selected in the Anti-Collision Settings, which is accessed via the Tools menu.

Show errors on ref well: If error ellipses are being displayed, this option displays the ellipses on the reference well.

If the user has opened a Travelling Cylinder plot from a plan, any offset surveys which are associated with the same Well will not display errors when the user selects to show these.

In the above image if the user opens the New Plan and offsets the current survey and the offset survey, when in the TC plot, if they select to display errors, NO errors will be displayed on the Current Survey because it is associated with the same well (Ref Well) as the plan which is being referenced. The offset survey will show errors as it is associated with a different well.

Selecting Show Errors on Ref Well allows the user to override this and display the errors on Current survey if they require.

It is worth noting here that if the user opens a TC plot from the Current survey and offsets the New Plan, even though the new plan is associated with the same well, the errors will display. The program behaves differently depending on whether a survey or plan is the reference for the TC plot.

Geo Steering data

These options are only available in the Section View or 3D Plots. They require data to be entered into the Geo-Steering Updates Dialog which can be accessed by right-clicking at plan or actual well level.

Target Zone: Displays the data from the Geo-Steering Updates table on the section and 3D plots.

Interpretation: This option is used in conjunction with the ROGII StarSteer integration

TVD Slice

This option is only available when viewing a spider plot. It allows the user to define a vertical slice to view on the chart.

User Defined Labels

If a chart has any user defined labels displayed on it, this option can be used to toggle them on/off.

General

Only available when viewing the Separation Factor plot. This option will toggle on/off the warning level lines on the chart.

Section View

Only available when viewing a Section View chart. Toggling this option will display the chart as if all surveys/plan points have the same azimuth. The X-Axis label will change from “Vertical Section” to “Unwrapped Displacement.”

The second way to add a custom label requires that you first enable at least one standard label (well names, casing, lithologies, annotations, etc.) on the chart. Hover over the label until the cursor changes to , and then double left-click. This will open the Label Properties Dialog, pictured below.

Select the relevant options in the dialog and then click on Apply. This will create the custom label on top of the existing label. Hover over the label until the cursor changes to again, then left-click and drag to move it.

Has tether: Set to YES to enable a tether line for the custom label. Initially, the tether line will point to the same location as the original label used to create the custom label, or the location where the custom label was created, depending upon the method used to create the custom label. The user can move the tether line anchor point by hovering over its location until the cursor changes to , and then left-clicking and dragging to the desired location.

Undo/redo: The wall plot composer now contains an undo and redo button, making it easier to correct mistakes.

Page width: Zooms the page so that the width of the page fills the user’s screen.

Whole page: Zooms the page so that the whole page fits the user’s screen.

Align multiple items: The wall plot composer can now align multiple items at once. Hold the CRTL key and click on multiple items to select them. Click on one of the align functions and this will align all of the selected items with the item that was selected last.

Match width: Hold the CRTL key and click on multiple items to select them. Select the match width button and all of the selected item’s width will be adjusted to match the item that was selected last.
