This Technical Note describes an issue where Well Seeker Pro fails to open. When the user attempts to launch the program by double left clicking on the desktop icon, the Well Seeker Pro splash screen (pictured below) will display as normal, but the program will then close immediately.
This issue is caused either by the user’s setup file becoming corrupted, or the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable version on the PC in question requiring updating.
The issue is solved by deleting the user’s setup file and allowing Well Seeker to automatically generate a new one. This can be achieved by performing the following steps:
Navigate to the user’s Well Seeker Pro roaming folder. The default location for this folder is: C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Well Seeker Pro.
NOTE: You will need to enable hidden items in Windows Explorer to be able to see the AppData folder. To do this, go to the View menu in Windows Explorer and then check the Hidden Items checkbox.
Inside the Well Seeker Pro roaming folder, you will see the setup file, called setupWS.ini. Delete this file.
Open Well Seeker Pro via the desktop shortcut. Well Seeker Pro will automatically generate a new setup file and should now open correctly.
Generating a setup file will reset your Well Seeker Pro settings to their factory defaults. The user will need to reselect their desired database (File – Select Database) as the new setup file will open the database that comes with the install.
If this has not resolved the issue, follow the steps to update the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable version.
To solve the issue, the user must download and install the latest update for Visual C++ Redistributable package for Microsoft Visual Studio.
First make sure that your Windows operating system is up to date. This may automatically install the package. To update Windows, follow these steps:
Press the Windows key and search for "windows update settings." Click on Windows Update Settings under Best Match.
In the Windows Update dialog, click on Check For Updates. Follow the instructions to download and install any available updates. You may be required to restart your computer before the installation of all updates is complete.
If this does not update the Visual C++ Redistributable package to the required version, you will need to download it manually. To do so, follow these steps:
Follow this link: Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads | Microsoft Learn
Scroll down to Latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Version. Click on the two links highlighted in the image below to download both the x64 and x86 versions of the package to your computer.
Run vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_resdist.x64.exe to install the package on your computer. After installation is complete, restart your computer.
You should now be able to open Well Seeker Pro.
